Transportation Landscape is Expanding With UAVs
Author Erin Gerhart
Small UAV Coalition advocates for policy changes that permit the operation of small unmanned aerial vehicles, also known as UAVs. The company recently hired Dentons Global Advisors Government Relations, LLC to lobby on their behalf. In early August of this year, the White House held a summit on advanced air mobility (AAM). This occurred in response to the June 2016 final ruling released by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) concerning small commercial UAVs. The 2016 regulations include weight restrictions (under 55 pounds) and location and elevation restrictions (no more than 400 feet above ground or by a structure). The maximum speed established for commercial UAV use was one hundred mph or 87 knots.
Following these regulations, the House of Representatives Bill 5315 was introduced to the House in September of 2021 and was passed on to the Senate September 14th of this year.
HR 5315 The Drone Infrastructure Inspection Grant Act states: the Secretary of Transportation shall establish a drone infrastructure inspection grant program to make grants to government entities to facilitate use of eligible small unmanned aircraft systems to increase efficiency…
reduce costs, improve worker and community safety, reduce carbon emissions, or meet other priorities (as determined by the Secretary) related to critical infrastructure projects. The bill goes on to state that the ensuing grants may be used to: purchase or lease small unmanned aerial systems, support the operational capabilities of eligible small unmanned aerial systems, contract for services, and support the program management capability of the government. The federal share of the project’s cost is not to exceed eighty percent and fifty million USD have been authorized in grant funds for both FY2023 and FY2024.
Dentons Global Advisors Government Relations, LLC has grossed 335,000 USD in 2022 so far and has been hired by 17 clients. Lobbyists Gregory Walden, Lara Tennyson, Margeaux Plaisted, and Michael Drobac are representing the company Small UAV Coalition.
